Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Tuesday hosted Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire and County Assembly Majority Leader Peter Muriithi at his official residence in Karen, amid rising political tensions in the county.
The meeting follows recent accusations by Governor Mbarire, who claimed that senior government officials were working to undermine elected leaders in Embu County. Her remarks have sparked political debate and drawn attention to growing divisions within the county’s leadership.
In a statement after the meeting, DP Kindiki downplayed the political friction, stating that the discussions centered on the progress of national government projects in Embu.
“We had a productive meeting with Governor Mbarire and Majority Leader Muriithi to assess the implementation status of national government initiatives in Embu County,” Kindiki said. “Our focus remains on service delivery and ensuring that development projects benefit the people.”
While the Deputy President did not directly address Mbarire’s claims, the meeting is widely seen as an effort to calm tensions and restore cooperation between local and national leaders.
Governor Mbarire has in recent weeks voiced frustration over what she described as interference by unnamed senior officials, warning that such actions could derail development efforts.
“We must respect the mandate given to elected leaders by the people. Any attempts to undermine that mandate are unacceptable,” she said in a previous address.
The closed-door meeting at Karen comes as pressure mounts on the government to foster unity and collaboration among leaders, especially at a time when counties are grappling with budget constraints, service delivery challenges, and public expectations for development.
Neither Mbarire nor Muriithi gave detailed public statements after the meeting, but insiders say both leaders expressed the need for stronger coordination with national authorities to address key concerns in Embu, including stalled infrastructure projects and access to public services.
The Deputy President assured the Embu delegation that the government is committed to resolving any misunderstandings and ensuring that development remains on track across all counties.
