Murkomen Applauds Ksh.116 Billion Climate Boost from Green Climate Fund

Kenya’s climate resilience agenda has received a significant boost following the approval of over Ksh.116 billion (USD 937.66 million) in funding from the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The announcement was made by Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, during the ongoing 8th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP2025) in Geneva.

Speaking after a high-level meeting with Stephanie Speck, Head of Fragility, Conflict and Violence at the GCF, Murkomen hailed the investment as a game-changing step in Kenya’s efforts to address the growing impacts of climate change.

“We are grateful for this substantial support, which will strengthen our national response to climate-related threats,” Murkomen said. “Climate change is not just an environmental issue—it is a serious threat multiplier that deepens insecurity and undermines livelihoods. This funding will help us build resilience across multiple sectors.”

Kenya is currently implementing 20 GCF-supported projects, including several readiness grants aimed at enhancing local capacity to confront environmental challenges. The new investment is expected to scale up these efforts and support additional initiatives in vulnerable regions.

During the meeting, Murkomen spotlighted the situation in the Dadaab refugee complex and surrounding host communities, calling for targeted investments in renewable energy and environmental restoration to support resilience and stability in the area.

“Communities in Dadaab face overlapping pressures—from climate change to displacement. We are asking for support to rehabilitate degraded lands and introduce sustainable energy solutions that will transform lives,” he said.

GCF’s Stephanie Speck welcomed Kenya’s proposal and reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to innovative, context-sensitive solutions in fragile environments.

“We recognize the urgency of acting where climate risks intersect with humanitarian crises. Kenya’s leadership is commendable, and we are ready to deepen our partnership to deliver lasting impact,” Speck stated.

Ambassador Dr. Francy Too, Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, also attended the meeting. She emphasized the crucial role of global partnerships in advancing Kenya’s climate objectives and supporting communities on the frontlines of climate stress.

The engagement underscored a shared commitment to climate justice and sustainable development, with both Kenya and the GCF pledging to prioritize communities most affected by environmental degradation and displacement.
