Security officers in Sololo have seized a massive consignment of bhang valued at Ksh.10.5 million, in a major anti-narcotics operation near the Kenya-Ethiopia border.
The seizure, which occurred on Monday at around 9 a.m., took place in the Elle Bor area. According to police reports, the illegal substance—weighing 350 kilograms and packed in 12 sacks—was being transported in a Toyota Land Cruiser when law enforcement officers intercepted the vehicle.
Confirming the incident, Sololo Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Joseph Nthiga stated that the suspect, a 27-year-old male driver, was arrested at the scene.
“We have arrested the driver, who is very young—just 27,” said Nthiga. “We have impounded the car and the consignment, which will be used as exhibit in court.”
Authorities suspect the drugs were trafficked into Kenya through one of the porous border points that criminal syndicates frequently exploit to smuggle contraband across international lines.
Sololo Sub-county Deputy Commissioner Edward Goko lauded the swift action by police and called for more resources to secure the border region.
“Our officers acted promptly and professionally in intercepting the smuggler,” Goko said. “We urge the government to increase the number of National Police Reservists at the Kenya-Ethiopia border to bolster security and deter such criminal activities.”
The suspect reportedly sustained an injury to his leg during the arrest and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed that he will be formally taken into custody once discharged.
The seizure marks one of the largest drug busts in the area in recent months, as authorities intensify operations to curb drug trafficking networks that exploit remote border regions.
The investigation is ongoing as police seek to establish the full extent of the smuggling ring and whether other individuals were involved.
