In a continued show of resolve against the production and sale of illicit alcohol, the National Police Service (NPS) has intensified its crackdown on deadly brews in Nyeri County.
On 5 June 2025, officers from the Kangemi Police Post, acting on intelligence, partnered with the Area Chief of Thunguma Location to carry out a targeted operation along the banks of River Chania. During the raid, authorities uncovered and seized 360 litres of kangara — a key ingredient in the brewing of chang’aa and other illegal spirits — concealed within dense thickets near the riverbank.
While no suspects were arrested at the scene, police say the operation is part of a broader strategy aimed at dismantling networks responsible for producing illicit alcohol in the region. The seized brew was destroyed on-site, and the containers used in the process were rendered unusable to prevent future operations.
In a statement following the operation, the NPS reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting lives from the dangers of unregulated and often lethal brews.
“This operation underscores our dedication to eradicating the illicit brew trade, which continues to endanger lives and disrupt communities,” the statement read. “We urge members of the public to work closely with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities related to illegal alcohol production.”
Illicit brews have long plagued various parts of Kenya, resulting in numerous fatalities and long-term health complications. Authorities have pledged to sustain the pressure on illegal manufacturers through intensified surveillance and community-led reporting mechanisms.
Residents in the area have welcomed the crackdown, citing concerns over the growing number of youth drawn into substance abuse and the increased health risks posed by toxic concoctions.
The NPS has called on citizens to remain vigilant and to report any information that may lead to further arrests or discoveries. Anonymous tips can be submitted to local police stations or through national hotlines.
As the war on illicit brews continues, law enforcement says operations similar to the one in Thunguma will be expanded to other hotspots identified through ongoing investigations.
