Questions You Must Answer to Secure a Visa in Kenya: What Consulates Want to Know

With international travel on the rise post-pandemic, thousands of Kenyans are lining up at foreign embassies and consulates in Nairobi every week to apply for visas. From students headed abroad for studies to tourists looking to explore new destinations, securing a visa is a crucial first step. However, many applicants are unaware of the key questions they must answer during their visa interviews.

Foreign missions have emphasized that interviews are designed to assess the genuineness of a traveler’s intent and their likelihood of returning home. Based on multiple consular sources and interviews with recent applicants, here are the common questions visa officers ask during the application process:

1. What is the purpose of your visit?
Applicants must clearly explain their reason for travel, whether for tourism, education, business, or family visits. Consular officials look for honest and detailed answers supported by documentation.

2. Have you visited this country before?
Visa officers inquire about past travel history to check compliance with previous visa regulations. Frequent and lawful travel often works in an applicant’s favor.

3. Where will you be staying during your visit?
Details of accommodation, including hotel bookings or addresses of relatives, are essential. Some embassies require confirmation documents as proof.

4. Do you have a travel itinerary?
Applicants are expected to present a day-by-day plan of their stay abroad, including flight bookings, places of interest, and any scheduled business or academic engagements.

5. How long do you intend to stay?
The intended duration must align with the type of visa applied for. Overstaying a visa can have serious future consequences.

6. What is your employment status?
Applicants should disclose their job title, employer, and work duration. Self-employed individuals may be asked for additional proof of income or business registration.

7. Do you intend to return to Kenya after your visit?
This is often the most critical question. Visa officers look for strong ties to Kenya—such as family, employment, property, or education—as proof that the applicant will return.

According to officials at the U.S. and U.K. Embassies in Nairobi, failure to convincingly answer these questions is one of the leading reasons for visa denial. They advise applicants to be honest, organized, and prepared with documents to back their statements.

"We are not looking to deny people visas. We simply want to be sure that applicants intend to follow the rules of the country they are visiting," said a visa officer at a European consulate.

As the demand for international travel grows, understanding and preparing for these questions can make the difference between approval and rejection.
