A gang suspected of killing a police officer during a routine patrol in Nakuru has been arrested following a swift operation by detectives, the National Police Service has confirmed.
The officer was ambushed and fatally shot on Sunday in the Free Area of Nakuru Town, while on patrol with two colleagues who sustained serious injuries during the attack. The two wounded officers are currently receiving treatment at Nakuru Level 5 Hospital.
A total of seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder. According to a police report, three suspects were apprehended at the scene, while four others — identified as William Nyairi Rioba, Nyari Nyamwara Maluke, Emmanuel Mwita, and Catherine Nkatha Zakayo — were tracked down and arrested at a lodging in the Tahidi area.
Upon interrogation, the suspects led officers to the location where an AK-47 rifle, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered. Police say the rifle will undergo forensic analysis to confirm its use in the shooting.
Further investigations revealed that the suspects were also found in possession of four mobile phones, assorted SIM cards, a motorcycle, and bus tickets dated May 25, 2025, indicating planned travel to Kehancha and Kisii, under the name Emmanuel Mwita.
Reports from Bondeni Police Station indicate that officers revisited the crime scene and recovered three 7.62mm spent cartridges and one 9mm cartridge, confirming the use of high-caliber firearms during the assault. One of the injured officers was also cut on the left hand with a panga during the attack, suggesting the use of multiple weapons.
The motive behind the attack is still under investigation, but police believe it may be linked to escalating gang activity in the region. Authorities have assured the public that more arrests may follow as the probe continues.
