Liverpool’s second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is set to join Brentford FC in a deal that could rise to €18 million (approximately $24 million), according to reports released on Sunday.
The 26-year-old Ireland international, who has served as a dependable understudy to Liverpool’s first-choice keeper Alisson Becker, is making the switch in pursuit of regular first-team football. Kelleher played a crucial role during the 2024/2025 Premier League campaign, featuring in 10 league matches when Alisson was sidelined by injury. His performances reignited long-standing interest from several Premier League clubs.
Brentford has reportedly agreed to an initial fee of €12.5 million, with the total package potentially rising to €18 million based on performance-related add-ons. Kelleher, who has one year remaining on his Liverpool contract, had also attracted interest from Leeds United, West Ham, and Bournemouth, but ultimately opted for a move to the London club.
Kelleher is best remembered by many Liverpool fans for his heroic display in the 2022 League Cup Final against Chelsea. Starting ahead of Alisson, the Irishman made several critical saves and famously scored the winning penalty in an epic 11-10 shootout victory.
At Brentford, Kelleher is expected to step in as the club’s new number one goalkeeper, replacing Mark Flekken, who is reportedly finalizing a €9 million move to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.
In response to Kelleher’s departure, Liverpool are set to bring in Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. The Georgian international agreed to join the Reds last year and is expected to report for pre-season under new head coach Arne Slot.
Kelleher’s move marks the end of a seven-year stint at Anfield, where he developed through Liverpool’s academy ranks and proved himself as a capable and composed shot-stopper in high-pressure situations.
