Geneva, Switzerland – June 3, 2025 – Kenya's commitment to addressing climate change and supporting vulnerable communities was underscored today during a high-level bilateral meeting at the Kenya Mission in Geneva. The meeting, hosted by Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, featured Ms. Stephanie Speck, Head of Fragility, Conflict and Violence (FCV) at the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
During the discussions, CS Murkomen expressed Kenya's deep appreciation for the GCF's continued support, particularly highlighting the approval of climate-resilient development projects totaling USD 937.66 million. These projects are instrumental in addressing the impacts of climate change while promoting sustainable, low-emission growth across the country.
Ms. Speck reaffirmed the GCF’s commitment to enhancing collaboration with Kenya. Significantly, she welcomed Kenya’s request for dedicated support to the Dadaab refugee camp and surrounding host communities, focusing on environmental restoration and renewable energy initiatives. She emphasized the importance of addressing the intersection of climate vulnerability and humanitarian challenges and pledged to explore innovative, resilience-building solutions.
This engagement highlighted the strong alignment between Kenya’s climate action agenda and the GCF’s mission to support vulnerable populations confronting both environmental degradation and displacement.
Also present at the meeting was Amb. Dr. Fancy Too, Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, who underscored the importance of international partnerships in achieving sustainable development goals.
The collaboration between Kenya and the GCF marks a significant step forward in the country's efforts to build climate resilience, support displaced communities, and promote sustainable development.
