Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale today made his maiden visit to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), reaffirming the government's unwavering commitment to strengthening the institution's capacity as Kenya's premier national referral and teaching hospital.
Accompanied by Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga and Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, CS Duale engaged in a consultative meeting with the KNH Board and Senior Management. The discussions centered on enhancing leadership, accountability, and the implementation of world-class service standards across all referral facilities.
During the meeting, CS Duale commended KNH's trailblazing achievements, including Kenya's first laparoscopic kidney resection and the world's first transhumeral total shoulder replacement. These milestones underscore KNH's global standing in medical innovation and its pivotal role in advancing healthcare in Kenya.
Following the meeting, CS Duale toured key departments within the hospital, including the cancer treatment center, radiotherapy bunker, and the oxygen plant currently under construction. He emphasized the need for county governments to enhance referral and primary healthcare services to alleviate the pressure on KNH and ensure equitable healthcare access across the country.
Additionally, CS Duale urged development partners to support KNH in areas such as equipment upgrades, digital transformation, research, and training. He highlighted that KNH remains a vital pillar in the delivery of Universal Health Coverage under the Social Health Insurance (SHI) scheme.
The visit was hosted by KNH leadership, led by Board Chair Dr. Samier Muravvej and Acting CEO Dr. William Sigilai. The engagement underscores the government's dedication to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and service delivery, aligning with the broader goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage for all Kenyans.
CS Duale's visit to KNH marks a significant step in the government's efforts to reinforce the capacity of national referral hospitals and ensure that all Kenyans have access to quality healthcare services.
