Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa has called on residents to register under the Social Health Authority (SHA) to benefit from affordable and comprehensive healthcare across public hospitals in Kenya.
Speaking at Malava Primary School during a community outreach event, Governor Barasa emphasized that the SHA program, in partnership with Taifa Care, offers access to free or subsidized treatment in all levels of public health facilities—ranging from primary care centers to advanced referral hospitals.
“I wish to urge residents of Kakamega to enroll under the SHA and Taifa Care program. You will be able to access free medical treatment at level two and three hospitals,” said Governor Barasa. “SHA also caters for up to 80% of costs at level five and six hospitals, where more specialized treatment is provided.”
According to the governor, the program requires a monthly contribution of only Ksh 300 per individual. In return, beneficiaries gain access to a wide range of essential health services, from outpatient visits to emergency care and inpatient treatment, with much of the cost fully or partially covered.
“This program ensures that no family has to choose between healthcare and financial survival,” Barasa added, underscoring the role of SHA in promoting universal health coverage in the county.
Governor Barasa urged local leaders, health officials, and community groups to help raise awareness and mobilize residents to take advantage of the initiative.
The SHA program is part of a broader national effort to enhance access to healthcare for all Kenyans, particularly low-income households that often struggle with medical expenses.
