Dr. Mercy Mwangangi has officially assumed office as the Chief Executive Officer of the State Health Agency (SHA), marking a new chapter in Kenya’s ongoing health sector reforms. She succeeds Dr. Robert Ingasira, who has held the position in an acting capacity.
The official handover ceremony was presided over by Dr. Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary in the State Department for Medical Services, who lauded both Dr. Ingasira’s stewardship and Dr. Mwangangi’s proven track record in public health leadership.
Dr. Oluga underscored the importance of SHA in delivering the government's ambitious Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda. “We must build a robust framework that not only guarantees the right to health but also improves access and outcomes for every Kenyan,” he stated.
He further called on the agency to cultivate a culture rooted in discipline, integrity, and service excellence. “The health of our nation is in your hands. SHA must now lead by example—driven by hard work and an unwavering focus on service delivery,” he added.
In her acceptance remarks, Dr. Mwangangi expressed gratitude for the opportunity and vowed to strengthen the agency’s role in delivering equitable, quality healthcare to all Kenyans.
“As we embark on this journey, my commitment is to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure the success of Universal Health Coverage. Every Kenyan deserves access to dignified, affordable healthcare,” she said.
The Principal Secretary pledged the full support of the State Department to SHA, assuring that the agency would be empowered to function efficiently and align its strategic objectives with national health priorities.
Dr. Mwangangi, a respected physician and public health expert, previously served as Chief Administrative Secretary at the Ministry of Health and was instrumental in steering Kenya’s COVID-19 response. Her leadership at SHA is expected to bring fresh energy and strategic focus to the agency’s mandate.
The SHA plays a key role in coordinating national health initiatives, policy implementation, and overseeing the integration of health services aimed at realizing UHC across the country.
