Under the leadership of Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii and guided by the transformative pillars of Nguzo Kumi, Uasin Gishu County is forging a bold new path toward a TB-free future, one where every resident has access to timely, affordable, and effective healthcare.
In a landmark move to eliminate tuberculosis (TB), the County Government has officially launched the implementation of activities under the Global Fund Grant Cycle 7 (GC7) for the 2024–2027 period.
The County Entry Meeting, held on Wednesday, brought together key partners and stakeholders to align strategies and lay a strong foundation for impactful health interventions.
Speaking at the event, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Services, Eng. Joseph Lagat, underscored the county’s unwavering commitment to achieving both national and global TB eradication targets.
“Through this initiative, we aim to reduce TB incidence by 80% and cut TB-related mortality by 90% by the year 2030,” said Eng. Lagat. “Our collaborative approach ensures that the impact is felt from hospitals down to the community level.”
He emphasized that joint planning, stakeholder coordination, and robust monitoring mechanisms are essential to the success of the program.
Dr. Paul Wangwe, Chief Officer for Preventive and Promotive Health, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the county’s strategic focus on decentralizing TB care through the operationalization of Moiben and Burnt Forest hospitals.
“These facilities will serve as critical hubs for TB screening, diagnosis, and treatment, particularly in underserved areas,” noted Dr. Wangwe. “We are also prioritizing technical support for Community Health Promoters (CHPs), who are the first line of defense in our communities.”
The meeting outlined several action-oriented strategies to ensure the success of GC7 in Uasin Gishu County. These include:
Selective training and sensitization of healthcare personnel
Joint development and oversight of GC7 activity timelines
Reinforcement of documentation and data collection efforts by health workers
Provision of technical support for CHPs and community TB champions
Establishment of rapid response teams to manage emerging issues during rollout
Through this initiative, and within the guiding framework of Nguzo Kumi, Uasin Gishu County is not only expanding access to health services but also setting a benchmark for how devolved units in Kenya can lead transformative change in disease prevention and control.
