The Government of Kenya has launched a nationwide campaign to register high school students aged 18 years and above for national identification cards, ahead of their final exams.
Speaking on May 29, Principal Secretary for Immigration and Citizen Services, Dr. Julius Bitok, urged education administrators to take the lead in ensuring that all eligible students are registered in time.
“The State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services, through the National Registration Bureau (NRB), intends to undertake a mobile national registration drive targeting eligible students in secondary schools during the current school term,” said Dr. Bitok.
To streamline the process, school principals and deputy principals have been appointed as designated identification agents, taking on a role traditionally handled by national government administration officers (NGOs). Their primary responsibility will be to coordinate directly with students and county registration officers to ensure smooth and efficient registration.
The move is part of a broader government strategy to simplify access to civil services by bringing essential services closer to the people, especially the youth. According to the Ministry of Education, conducting ID registration within schools is expected to reduce the burden on civil registration offices, which are often overcrowded during exam seasons.
“This initiative will not only help students prepare for civic life after school but also ensure that none are left behind during national examinations or post-secondary applications due to a lack of identification,” added Dr. Bitok.
