In a big win against drug trafficking, two suspects were apprehended on Tuesday after anti-narcotics officers overtook a vehicle carrying 250 kilograms of bhang valued at approximately Sh7.5 million.
The two suspects, Samuel Baraza Nyongesa, aged 38, and Lawrence Onyango Asindi, were apprehended in Kitanga village, Machakos County, following a thrilling car chase. The police revealed that the operation was tipped off and carried out by anti-drug detectives who had earlier arranged an ambush at the Lari flyover in Kiambu County.
The two had managed to remain out of the first police dragnet but were later cornered and arrested in a black Toyota Noah, registration number KDN 218A.
Officers discovered 10 gunny bags filled with bhang stashed inside the vehicle during the car search. The seized drugs have since been transported to the DCI Headquarters in Nairobi, where they are stored as evidence for ongoing investigations.
Police sources confirmed that the suspects are already under arrest and will be arraigned in court once the preliminary investigations have been completed.
"This seizure is a significant blow to drug trafficking rings operating across counties," the senior officer, who was among the team involved in the operation, said. "We commend timely coordination of our teams and also call upon the public to continue sharing information that can help us fight this vice."
Authorities have stepped up monitoring along major road routes in wake of increasing cases of inter-county drug trafficking.
