Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Wednesday visited the rural home of Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka in Tseikuru, Kitui County, ahead of a closed-door meeting with several opposition leaders.
The visit comes at a time of mounting political realignments and speculation over fresh coalition talks in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
Sources familiar with the event said the gathering is expected to focus on national cohesion, economic recovery, and efforts to strengthen the opposition’s position in the country’s political landscape.
“This is not just a courtesy call. There are real discussions going on about the future of this country and how leaders can come together to offer solutions,” said a senior Wiper official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Speaking briefly to journalists at the gate of Kalonzo’s homestead, Gachagua remained guarded but hinted at a willingness to work across the political divide.
“The country is going through many challenges. It is time for leaders to talk—not shout at each other. I came here because Kalonzo is a man I respect, and I believe dialogue is the way forward,” he said.
Kalonzo, in a short address before the meeting, welcomed Gachagua and described the moment as a “turning point” in the national conversation.
“Kenya needs healing. Kenya needs unity. We are here to reflect deeply and forge a common path that prioritizes the people over politics,” Kalonzo said.
The unexpected presence of Gachagua, who has kept a low profile since his fallout with key figures in the Kenya Kwanza administration, has added a new layer of intrigue to the meeting. Analysts say it could signal a broader strategy to reshape opposition alliances, particularly with Kalonzo’s growing influence in Azimio and Gachagua’s appeal in the Mount Kenya region.
Political analyst Mercy Wanjiru noted, “If this is the beginning of a Gachagua-Kalonzo axis, then it could significantly alter the political equation heading into 2027. It’s also a message that theRigathi Gachagua Visits Kalonzo Musyoka's Tseikuru Home Ahead of Key Opposition Talks
