Kenya is once again set to take center stage in the world of athletics as preparations near completion for the Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour, scheduled for Saturday, May 31, at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi.
Barnaba Korir, Athletics Kenya (AK) Nairobi branch chairman, has expressed his enthusiasm and confidence in the country’s readiness to host the international event, which enters its sixth consecutive edition. Speaking to the press, Korir described the occasion as both an honor and a demonstration of Kenya’s growing reputation in global athletics.
"We are thrilled to host this prestigious event once again. It’s a privilege and a sign of trust in Kenya’s ability to deliver a world-class competition. Preparations are complete, and we are ready to welcome the world," said Korir.
He extended gratitude to the government for its continuous support, acknowledging its role in enabling Kenya to remain a key fixture on the international athletics calendar.
"The government has been instrumental in supporting athletics. For the past six years, we’ve hosted the Kip Keino Classic successfully, and we commit to maintaining transparency and accountability," he noted.
Named after legendary Olympian Kipchoge Keino, the event is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold Series, making it one of the top-tier track and field meets globally. This year’s edition promises to be even more competitive, with a wave of top international athletes expected to compete alongside Kenya’s finest.
"The participation of more international athletes will make the event even more thrilling. It’s a chance for us to showcase not just our talent, but also our ability to host high-profile sporting events," added Korir.
He also hinted at a fierce level of competition, describing the athletes as “hungry for success,” and called on fans to attend in large numbers to cheer on the competitors.
With the Kip Keino Classic serving as a crucial qualifying and ranking event ahead of the Paris 2025 World Championships, athletes are expected to bring their best to Nairobi, heightening anticipation among fans and stakeholders alike.
As final preparations wrap up, Kenya is poised to once again affirm its status as a global athletics powerhouse and a dependable host for major international sports events.
