Mbale High School in Vihiga County has been closed indefinitely following a violent student protest triggered by the administration’s decision to deny learners the opportunity to watch Sunday’s English Premier League (EPL) final matches.
The unrest began on Sunday evening, shortly after it became clear that students would not be allowed access to television broadcasts of the much-anticipated EPL finale. According to eyewitness accounts, tensions escalated quickly, with students vandalizing school property, including classrooms and dormitory windows.
“We tried to contain the situation, but the students were too agitated,” said a teacher at the school who requested anonymity. “They felt it was unfair, especially since many of them had been looking forward to the games as a break from the usual academic routine.”
The school's administration confirmed the indefinite closure on Monday morning, with parents instructed to collect their children as soon as possible. No injuries were reported during the incident, but significant property damage was sustained.
Vihiga County Education Director, Patrick Mukopi, condemned the incident and assured the public that investigations are underway to determine the root cause of the unrest and hold responsible parties accountable.
“We understand the students’ passion for football, but destruction of property and disorder cannot be tolerated in any learning institution. Disciplinary action will follow,” said Mr. Mukopi.
