Hon. Mumina Defends Teacher Promotions, Warns Against Political Meddling

Isiolo County MP Hon. Mumina Bonaya has come out strongly in support of the recent teacher promotions carried out by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), urging leaders to respect the Commission’s independence and warning against political interference.

Addressing journalists at Parliament Buildings on Monday, Hon. Bonaya expressed concern over what she described as “unjustified political pressure” from certain quarters seeking to reverse the TSC’s recent decisions. She said the promotions had marked a significant step in addressing long-standing disparities, especially in marginalized regions like Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs).

“For the first time, TSC acknowledged the years of service and challenges faced by teachers in hardship areas. This progress should be celebrated, not fought,” said Hon. Bonaya.

She cautioned that efforts to undermine the promotions could roll back gains made toward equality and inclusivity, and called on Parliament to protect constitutional institutions from external manipulation.

“It is deeply unfortunate that when justice finally reaches regions that have been historically sidelined, we are met with resistance. Where were these voices when ASAL counties were continuously overlooked?” she posed.

The legislator emphasized that the TSC had followed fair and objective criteria, and that the recent promotions were long overdue recognition for teachers who have served under difficult conditions with minimal support.

In a bold declaration, Hon. Bonaya stated that she would not hesitate to seek legal or parliamentary redress if the pressure on the Commission persisted.

“I am ready to go to court and bring this issue to the floor of the House if necessary. We cannot allow oversight mechanisms to become tools of marginalization,” she warned.

She concluded by calling on her fellow lawmakers to champion justice and uphold the autonomy of institutions like the TSC, noting that inclusivity and equal opportunity are vital to national unity and progress.

“This is not just about promotions. It is about building a just and equitable society where no Kenyan feels left behind,” she said.
