Police in Kakamega have issued a 72-hour ultimatum to Cleophas Malala, the Deputy Party Leader of the Democratic Congress Party (DCP), directing him to report to the Western Regional Police Headquarters to respond to allegations linked to political unrest at a weekend rally.
Western Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud confirmed on Monday that Malala is required to present himself without fail to record a formal statement concerning the violence that erupted during a DCP rally held in Kakamega on Saturday.
"The former senator must report to my office within 72 hours. We are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the chaos that disrupted public order and endangered lives during the event," said Commander Mohamud.
The rally, which was part of the party’s ongoing grassroots mobilization campaign, was marred by confrontations between rival factions, forcing police to intervene and disperse the crowd using tear gas. Several individuals were reportedly injured, with property also damaged in the fracas.
Malala, who served as Kakamega Senator between 2017 and 2022, has yet to issue a public statement in response to the police summons. His office, however, has previously dismissed allegations of incitement as politically motivated.
Commander Mohamud emphasized that the investigation is focused on establishing individual responsibility, regardless of political affiliation. "This is not about politics. It is about ensuring accountability and upholding the rule of law. No one is above the law,” he stated.
The police have indicated that failure by Malala to comply with the summons will result in further legal action, including the possible issuance of an arrest warrant.
The incident has intensified calls for political leaders to exercise restraint and ensure their events do not incite violence or disrupt public peace ahead of the 2027 general elections.
