Over 200 Bungoma Households Connected to Power Under REREC Last Mile Project
More than 200 households in Bungoma County have been connected to electricity under the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) Last Mile Connectivity Programme, a move hailed as a major step in expanding access to reliable and affordable power in rural areas.
The connections were officially commissioned during events held in Khalumuli in Sitikho Ward, Matunda and Bokoli Wards in Webuye West Sub-County, as well as Kamachei in Chebyuk Ward and Embakasi and Chesikakil Wards in Mt. Elgon Sub-County.
Speaking at the launch, Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi emphasized that the Last Mile Connectivity Project is transforming rural livelihoods by making electricity more accessible and affordable.
“Reliable power is key to unlocking development opportunities, improving education outcomes, and supporting small-scale enterprises. This initiative aims to spur socio-economic growth by ensuring that homes, schools, health facilities, and businesses in previously underserved areas are connected to the national grid,” Wandayi said.
Bungoma Deputy Governor Janepher Mbatiany lauded the national government for prioritizing rural electrification, noting that the new connections would boost local economic activities, enhance security, and enable farmers and traders to adopt value addition and modern technologies.
“As residents, we need to safeguard electricity infrastructure and make good use of these connections to improve our livelihoods,” Mbatiany added.
The commissioning events were also attended by Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama, Mt. Elgon MP Fred Kapondi, ward MCAs, Chief Officer for Livestock Andrew Musungu, and other national and county government officials alongside local leaders. Both MPs welcomed the electrification drive as a catalyst for rural development and economic empowerment.
The project underscores the government’s commitment to bridging the energy gap in rural areas, supporting development, and improving the quality of life for residents across Bungoma County.
