Uasin Gishu Chamber of Commerce Calls for Intelligent Traffic Light System, Timely Licensing as Leaders Open Serani Mall

The Chairman of the Uasin Gishu Kenya National Chamber of Commerce, Wily Kenei, has called on the county government to urgently address traffic congestion and delays in issuance of business permits in Eldoret town.

Kenei spoke after joining the family of Justice Hillary Chemitei, his wife Rose, and other leaders during the official opening of Serani Mall in Eldoret. The event was also attended by Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii ,Nandi governor Stephen Sang , Senator Prof Margaret Kamar,Chairman EPZA Advocate Richard Cheruiyot,Hon Justice Luka Kimaru, Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Dr Edison Nyale among others.

The Chief guest Cabinet Secretary for Interior Kipchumba Murkomen  congratulated Justice Chemitei, whom he described as a friend and mentor, for making the bold investment in the region. He noted that the mall will not only create employment opportunities but also contribute substantially to the economic growth of Eldoret and its environs.

Traffic Lights Slowing Movement

Kenei expressed concern over the current traffic light system within Eldoret’s Central Business District (CBD), saying the lack of proper synchronization is slowing down motor vehicle movement and discouraging business activity.

“The traffic lights are not well synchronized. In some sections within a 500-metre range, vehicles are stopped for five minutes and released for only two minutes before stopping again. This has created unnecessary congestion and frustration among motorists,” he said.

He added that pedestrian lights remain red for extended periods without turning green, making it difficult and unsafe for residents to cross the roads.

“The pedestrian lights must function properly. They should turn green to allow safe crossing. Eldoret is a growing city and requires an intelligent traffic system that matches its modern status,” Kenei noted.

He warned that many motorists are now avoiding the CBD due to traffic delays, which negatively affects traders and businesses operating within the town.

Delay in Business Permits

The Chamber Chairman also raised concern over delays in the issuance of trade licenses by the county government.

“Until now, the county government has not been in a position to issue business licenses even when traders are ready to pay. This has cost many businesses valuable opportunities, especially when trade licenses are required during tender applications,” he said.

Kenei urged the county administration to ensure that business permits are issued from January 1st every year to streamline operations and enhance revenue collection.

“Issuing licenses at the beginning of the year will not only support entrepreneurs but also improve the county’s revenue performance,” he added.

Praise for Serani Mall Investment

At the same time, Kenei congratulated the investor behind Serani Mall, describing the development as a strong vote of confidence in Eldoret’s economic potential.

“This magnificent mall demonstrates the trust that investors now have in Eldoret. It has created employment opportunities, provided more space for SMEs to operate, and will significantly boost county revenue,” he said.

He further noted that the presence of Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen at the launch sent a strong message about the government’s commitment to security.

“Where there is security, businesses thrive and communities prosper. The government’s commitment to providing a secure environment gives investors confidence to expand and create more opportunities for our people,” Kenei said.

The opening of Serani Mall marks another milestone in Eldoret’s transformation into a vibrant commercial hub in the North Rift region.
