Kiambu County Woman Rep Flags Off Sanitary Towels Distribution in All 12 Constituencies

The Woman Representative for Kiambu County, Ann Wamuratha, has officially launched a countywide distribution of sanitary towels to girls in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), targeting all 12 constituencies in a bold effort to tackle period poverty and boost school attendance.

The initiative, implemented in collaboration with education stakeholders and witnessed by the Kiambu County Deputy Director of Education, aims to ensure that no girl misses school due to a lack of menstrual hygiene products. The programme is designed to safeguard the dignity of learners while addressing absenteeism and poor academic performance linked to limited access to sanitary towels.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Hon. Wamuratha underscored the importance of menstrual health management in advancing girls’ education.

“Access to sanitary towels is not a privilege — it is a basic necessity. No girl should be forced to stay home because of her period. When we support our girls, we strengthen our schools and our future,” she said.

Beyond the sanitary towels distribution, the Woman Representative also oversaw the delivery of water tanks to several learning institutions to improve hygiene standards and create a more supportive environment for students. Beneficiary schools include Chief Wandie Primary School, Thindigua Primary School, and Benson Njau Primary School.

The installation of water tanks is expected to enhance access to clean water, facilitate proper menstrual hygiene management, and promote overall sanitation within the schools.

Education officials present at the event lauded the initiative, describing it as timely and aligned with national efforts to retain learners in school and advance gender equality in education.

The programme highlights Hon. Wamuratha’s continued focus on girl-child empowerment and her broader commitment to investing in safe, dignified, and inclusive learning environments across Kiambu County.
