Elgeyo Marakwet County Launches Campaign Against Drug and Substance Abuse

The Elgeyo Marakwet County Government, in partnership with the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), has launched a countywide campaign to combat drug and substance abuse. The initiative was officially launched in Iten by County Secretary Mr. Lazarus Chebii, representing Governor Francis Cheboi, alongside Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Hebert Kombo.

The campaign seeks to address the growing challenge of substance abuse in the region, which mirrors a national concern affecting an estimated 4.7 million Kenyans aged 15-65. Alcohol remains the most commonly abused substance, impacting over 3.2 million people, with men and young adults identified as the most vulnerable groups. Alarmingly, nearly half of drug users are adolescents aged 10-19, with some reportedly initiating substance use as early as seven years old.

NACADA has been collaborating with county governments to raise awareness, strengthen community involvement, and advocate for policies that curb substance abuse. Speaking during the launch, County Secretary Chebii emphasized the importance of community participation and preventive measures in protecting young people and building a healthier society.

The campaign, themed “Empowering Communities for a Brighter Future,” will run across Elgeyo Marakwet County until Friday. It will involve public education, outreach programs, and engagement with local leaders to ensure sustainable impact in the fight against drugs and alcohol abuse.
