170 Youth Receive Driving Skills in Nandi Hills Initiative
In a powerful demonstration of community empowerment, respected mobilizer Leonard Arap Kirwa officially flagged off partially paid driving classes in Nandi Hills today, providing a life-changing opportunity to 170 young people from the area.
Speaking at the launch, Kirwa emphasized that driving skills go far beyond the ability to operate a vehicle. “A driving skill is more than just learning how to control a vehicle — it is opening the door to employment, independence, and dignity,” he said. “For many of these young people, this is the first step toward financial independence and self-reliance.”
The initiative, conducted in partnership with Asis Driving School, aims to equip participants with professional driving skills while instilling confidence, responsibility, and resilience. Through practical lessons and mentorship, the program seeks to prepare the youth not only for road proficiency but also for future career opportunities in transport, logistics, and other sectors that require certified drivers.
Kirwa described the initiative as part of a larger vision to empower young people in Nandi Hills and surrounding areas. “We are investing in our youth because they are the backbone of our community. When young people are empowered with skills, they become agents of change in their families and neighborhoods,” he said.
During the event, several beneficiaries shared their excitement and hopes for the future. One participant, 22-year-old James Kiplagat, said, “This opportunity means a lot to me. I have always wanted to learn how to drive, but it was not affordable. Now I can gain a skill that will help me secure a job and support my family.”
Kirwa also addressed the youths who did not secure a slot in this first batch. “Do not lose hope,” he encouraged. “More opportunities are coming. We will continue working to ensure that no young person is left behind. Every young person deserves a chance to build their future.”
The program represents a partnership model that combines community leadership, private sector expertise, and youth engagement. Asis Driving School will provide certified instructors, training vehicles, and structured courses to ensure participants meet professional driving standards.
Kirwa highlighted that beyond the immediate skill acquisition, the program also fosters personal development. “We are not just teaching driving; we are building confidence, creating opportunities, and investing in the future of our community. Skills like this teach discipline, responsibility, and perseverance — qualities that go far beyond the road,” he said.
The launch event was attended by community elders, local leaders, and parents who praised the initiative for its inclusive approach and its potential to transform lives. Several parents expressed relief and gratitude that their children now have access to structured training that could increase their chances of gainful employment.
This initiative is the first phase of a broader youth empowerment program in Nandi Hills, which aims to extend skill-based training to more areas and increase accessibility. With a focus on practical, marketable skills, the program seeks to address unemployment and provide young people with tools to navigate Kenya’s competitive job market successfully.
As the 170 beneficiaries embark on their driving lessons, community leaders hope the program will inspire more private-public collaborations to create opportunities for youth empowerment. Kirwa concluded the launch with a message of hope and determination: “To the young people here today, remember this is only the beginning. Use this opportunity well. Believe in yourselves, and the future is bright. Together, we move forward. Together, we empower our generation.”
