Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya Narrowly Escapes Attack During Campaign Rally

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya faced a harrowing moment on November 22, 2025, when his campaign rally in Chwele-Kabuchai Ward, Bungoma County, was violently disrupted. According to reports, unknown assailants fired live bullets and released tear gas canisters, forcing the governor to cut short his address and flee the scene.

Chaos Erupts During Rally

Governor Natembeya had been speaking at a meeting in Namakhele, addressing a crowd alongside several political heavyweights, including the area MP and former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati Kalasinga.  Midway through his speech, tension escalated when unidentified individuals stormed the venue. According to witnesses, the intruders fired several shots into the air and dispersed tear gas, creating panic among attendees.

The commotion forced Natembeya and his entourage to abandon the rally. Security personnel swiftly evacuated him as supporters scattered to take cover.

Political Accusations Intensify

In his remarks before the disruption, Governor Natembeya criticized Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, alleging that the Speaker was undermining democratic processes in the region. He claimed Wetang’ula was suppressing dissent and obstructing fair political competition in Kabuchai constituency.

Natembeya pointed to a historic pattern of violence in the area, referencing a previous incident during a United Opposition tour when his motorcade was attacked.

Condemnation and Calls for Investigation

The attack has drawn sharp condemnation from political leaders and civil society. Many are calling for a thorough investigation into the use of force and alleged collusion in politically motivated violence.

Governor’s Response

In the aftermath, Governor Natembeya expressed grave concern over the escalation of political violence. He reiterated his commitment to democracy and insisted that such tactics would not silence his voice or deter his campaign. He called for law enforcement to act decisively and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Broader Context of Political Tensions

This is not the first time Governor Natembeya has faced hostility during public appearances. Earlier this year, his convoy was ambushed, leaving his driver and security officers injured. Additionally, he previously fled a gathering at the home of late MP Malulu Injendi after rowdy youths reportedly chanted pro-government slogans.

In response to past incidents, Natembeya has consistently called for peace and an end to political thuggery. He has emphasized that violence undermines the very foundations of democracy.

Looking Ahead

The incident in Chwele-Kabuchai is being closely watched as a worrying sign of deteriorating political tolerance in Western Kenya. With national and local elections on the horizon, analysts warn that unchecked aggression and intimidation could threaten not only individual safety but broader democratic processes.
