Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Issues Public Warning After Chemical Spillage in Matharu Area
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has issued a public alert following a chemical spillage that occurred on Thursday evening after a lorry overturned in the Matharu area, Tarakwa Ward, Timboroa Location.
The vehicle, which was reportedly en route to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), spilled a white substance into the Kipkarren–Bindura–Kesses River, raising concerns about possible contamination of water used by residents downstream.
According to the Governor, the substance is suspected to be an industrial chemical, though the exact nature and level of risk remain under assessment.
“I have received reports of an overturned lorry that resulted in a spillage of a white substance into the river. As investigations continue, residents are advised to temporarily avoid using water from the affected river for drinking, domestic use, or livestock,” Governor Bii said.
He assured the public that the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has been notified and is conducting an urgent assessment to identify the chemical involved and determine the potential hazards.
Local authorities, including public health officers and environmental experts, have also been deployed to monitor the situation and guide residents on safety measures.
Governor Bii urged the community to remain vigilant and prioritize safety until official communication confirms that the water is safe for use.
Further updates will be issued once NEMA completes its analysis.
