CS Murkomen Warns Gachagua Allies Ahead of Former DP’s Return

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has downplayed the anticipated return of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, cautioning his allies against attempts to incite unrest.

Speaking during his Jukwaa la Usalama tour in Murang’a on Tuesday, Murkomen dismissed what he termed as unnecessary hype surrounding Mr Gachagua’s arrival from the United States, where he has been for several weeks.

“There are so many people landing in Kenya every day, so I don't know why we should be worried when one person is landing,” said the CS, responding to questions about planned welcome activities by Gachagua’s supporters.

Murkomen, however, issued a stern warning to the former DP and his allies, emphasizing that the government will not tolerate any inflammatory remarks or actions likely to disrupt peace.

“For the time he has been away, the country has been relatively peaceful,” he noted. “The security agencies are adequately prepared to deal with any insecurity issues.”

The CS also recalled incidents of violence during Mr Gachagua’s previous public appearances, accusing some of his supporters of disguising as protesters to cause chaos.

“We are very prepared. At all times, the National Police Service is prepared to protect citizens and their property. We are aware of those elements threatening disruption, threatening the ongoing football tournament among other activities,” he said.

Murkomen reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding law and order, warning that legal action will be taken against anyone who attempts to breach the law.

“We wish Kenya remains peaceful the way it has been in the last three to four weeks. I encourage leaders to continue with their political activities in a peaceful environment,” said the CS.

“But since we have no control over people’s behaviour and character, we are prepared to protect the citizens and their property at all times,” he added.

Mr Gachagua is expected back in the country later this week, amid speculation about his political future and possible public engagements upon return.
