In a major move that marks a significant milestone for Kenyan football, Gor Mahia’s star midfielder Austin Odhiambo is set to join Belgian top-tier club Royal Charleroi Sporting Club. The Belgian outfit has officially tabled a USD 750,000 transfer offer for the attacking midfielder, following his standout performances at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The deal, made in full compliance with FIFA and CAF regulations, signals the growing international interest in Kenyan football talent and highlights Austin’s meteoric rise from grassroots football to the European stage.

Born on December 16, 1998, in Siaya County, Austin's journey to the top has been nothing short of inspirational. Spotted by AFC Leopards Youth coach Boniface Ambani while in his final year at Ambira Boys High School, Ugenya, the young midfielder joined the AFC Leopards youth system in 2016 and began making waves in the local football scene.

In 2018, he was named the best player at the prestigious Michael Olunga tournament, solidifying his reputation as one of the country's most promising talents. Austin rose through the ranks to play for the AFC Leopards senior team until late 2021 before making a high-profile free-agent switch to Gor Mahia under the guidance of coach Mark Harrison.

Austin’s impact at Gor Mahia was immediate and profound. He was instrumental in their recent FKF Premier League campaign, where he was crowned the Most Valuable Player for the 2023/2024 season. His stats speak volumes: 12 goals and 13 assists—the highest contribution by any midfielder that season.

He made his senior debut for the Harambee Stars in 2024 and has since become a key figure for the national team. His performances at CHAN have further cemented his status as a midfield maestro, drawing comparisons to global greats such as Luka Modrić and Thiago Alcântara.

What makes Austin’s story truly remarkable is the context. Coming from a country where football is still growing and infrastructure often lags behind global standards, he has defied the odds to reach elite levels of the sport. His determination, talent, and relentless work ethic have propelled him into a league of extraordinary footballers.

As Austin prepares to join Royal Charleroi Sporting Club in Belgium, he carries with him the hopes of a nation and the dreams of many young Kenyan footballers. His transfer is not only a personal victory but a beacon for Kenyan football’s potential on the world stage.

From Siaya to Europe, Austin Odhiambo's journey is far from over—and the world is now watching.
