The Embu Farmers Field Day, held under the inspiring theme "Elevating Sustainable Livelihoods Through Dairy Farming," marked a significant step toward empowering dairy farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture in Embu County.
Hosted at St. Marks Kigari Teachers Training College, the event attracted over 3,000 farmers from 19 cooperatives across the region. Organized through a collaborative effort by Daima Sacco Society Ltd, AVSI Kenya, E4Impact Entrepreneurship Center Kenya, Farm Africa, and the Kenya Dairy Board, the forum provided farmers with crucial exposure to modern dairy farming practices, sustainable value chains, quality assurance, and the innovative conversion of cow waste into biogas energy.
The Chief Guest, Kenya Dairy Board Chairman Genesio Mugo, underscored the Board’s dedication to building a robust, farmer-centered dairy sector that not only supports food security but also drives economic empowerment at the grassroots.
“This event is more than just a farmers' meeting. It represents a shared commitment to transforming the dairy industry by equipping our farmers with the right knowledge, tools, and market linkages,” Mugo stated.
He emphasized that capacity-building, value addition, and access to affordable financing are the cornerstones for unlocking the full potential of the dairy sector. Mugo urged farmers to prioritize quality and embrace modern technologies that will make Kenyan dairy products more competitive in both local and international markets.
To further strengthen this mission, the Kenya Dairy Board, alongside development partners, distributed milk cans and quality and safety kits to cooperatives, youth, and persons living with disabilities (PWDs) engaged in the dairy value chain. These awards were not only a gesture of support but also a deliberate effort to ensure inclusivity and shared prosperity within the sector.
Leaders from Daima Sacco and representatives from the development partners praised the farmers’ enthusiasm and reiterated their organizations’ readiness to continue providing technical, financial, and educational support to the dairy community.
The Embu Farmers Field Day showcased the power of collaboration in building resilient farming systems. It reinforced the importance of nurturing partnerships that will sustainably grow the sector, improve livelihoods, and create new opportunities for farmers across Kenya.
The future of dairy farming in Kenya is undoubtedly bright with such proactive engagements at the grassroots level.
