Babu Owino Condemns Police Brutality Following Visit to Victims at Kenyatta National Hospital

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Hon. Babu Owino has issued a powerful condemnation of police brutality after visiting victims of violence sustained during recent protests at Kenyatta National Hospital.

In a statement released Thursday, Hon. Owino revealed that 16 young Kenyans injured by police had been admitted to the hospital. While nine have since been discharged, seven remain hospitalized, with two in critical condition — including the young man who was shockingly shot at point-blank range during protests yesterday.

“What I witnessed today is nothing short of a massacre,” Owino said. “One patient had seven gunshot wounds in the back, two were shot in the eye, another in the leg, one in the neck, and another in the lower back. These were deliberate, targeted attacks on unarmed civilians — children of this republic.”

He strongly condemned the use of live ammunition against peaceful protesters, many of whom were exercising their constitutional rights.

“This is not the Kenya we want. No Kenyan should be hunted down for expressing their views or standing up for their future,” Owino stated. “The use of live bullets against protesters is criminal and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.”

Hon. Owino called on President William Ruto to take full responsibility for the violence, accusing the highest levels of government of complicity due to silence on the matter.

“The blood of these young men and women is on the hands of those who gave the shoot-to-kill orders — and silence at the highest level of government is complicity,” he warned.

He vowed that the people will continue to demand justice and accountability, declaring:

“We will not be cowed. We will not stop demanding justice. And we will not stop standing with the people of Kenya until those responsible are held to account.”
