The University of Eldoret (UoE) has been recognized as the Best Innovation Institution at the 2025 Eldoret City Innovation Week, a resounding testament to its relentless pursuit of excellence in research, innovation, and practical problem-solving. The event, held from June 5th to 7th under the theme “Building a Sustainable, Technologically Advanced and Inclusive Urban Ecosystem,” brought together a rich tapestry of stakeholders from academia, government, civil society, and industry.
UoE’s strong presence at the innovation week was marked by a vibrant and multidisciplinary exhibition, with faculty, students, and administrative staff showcasing groundbreaking solutions aimed at addressing real-world challenges. From agriculture and environment to tech-driven justice solutions, the university's innovations demonstrated both academic rigor and deep societal relevance.
In addition to student showcases, faculty members also contributed high-impact research. Dr. Douglas Odhiambo from the Department of Technology Education, alongside student Godfrey Mwangi, presented a microcontroller-based irrigation system and a smart window prototype aimed at improving household energy efficiency. From the Department of Biotechnology, Dr. Mutati Muasya and Miss Betty Gakii introduced a tissue-cultured potato variety designed to enhance food security and boost agricultural productivity.
The award for Best Innovation Institution not only recognized the ingenuity of UoE’s innovations but also honored the university's well-established support systems, including innovation hubs, incubation programs, intellectual property support, mentorship initiatives, and active industry linkages.
“This is more than an award. It’s a national and international affirmation of our commitment to producing graduates who are not only thinkers but doers — leaders ready to transform the world,” said a representative from the university’s innovation and research department.
Special appreciation was extended to Dr. Emily Chemoiwa and Dr. Becky Aloo for their instrumental roles in coordinating the university’s participation and success at the event.
As the curtains fall on the 2025 Eldoret City Innovation Week, the University of Eldoret continues its journey as a beacon of knowledge and a catalyst for innovation. With this accolade, the institution strengthens its standing as a leader in Kenya’s innovation ecosystem, where the Flame of Knowledge continues to burn bright, and the Fountain of Innovation flows even stronger.
