UDA Summons Two MCAs Over Alleged Links to Rigathi Gachagua’s New Party

Tensions within Kenya’s ruling party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), have escalated after the party’s disciplinary committee summoned two nominated Members of County Assembly (MCAs) for allegedly associating with a rival political formation linked to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The MCAs, Anne Nthumbi of Nyeri County Assembly and Joy Muthoni Mwangi of Nairobi County Assembly, have been summoned to appear before UDA’s disciplinary committee on June 20, 2025, to respond to allegations of political disloyalty.

According to a letter signed by Charles Njenga, the chairperson of the UDA disciplinary committee, the two are accused of openly affiliating with the emerging Democracy for the Citizen Party (DCP), a political outfit reportedly backed by Gachagua, who has recently drifted away from President William Ruto’s political inner circle.

“Evidence of your participation in the political activities of another party, specifically the Democracy for the Citizen Party, on 15th May 2025, where available evidence shows your active association and participation in that event, including but not limited to wearing branded merchandise of the said party,” the letter stated.

The party argues that their actions violate UDA’s code of conduct, which bars members from supporting or associating with rival political parties. If found guilty, the two face disciplinary actions, including fines, suspension, or expulsion from the party.

“Accordingly, and pursuant to Article 29 of the UDA constitution, you are hereby summoned to appear before the disciplinary committee on June 20 at 9 a.m. at Hustler Plaza,” the letter added. The MCAs have been allowed to appear either in person or with legal representation.

The development follows the recent ouster of nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba, who was expelled from the party after facing allegations of gross misconduct—marking what observers say is an increasing trend of UDA cracking down on dissent within its ranks.

The growing alignment of certain elected leaders with Gachagua’s DCP is fueling speculation about an impending political split ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially as internal rivalries within the ruling coalition become more visible.

Political analysts say UDA’s move signals its intent to stamp out disloyalty early and send a strong message to other members flirting with alternative political vehicles.

As the June 20 disciplinary hearing approaches, all eyes will be on how the party handles the matter—and whether this is the beginning of a wider fallout in the ruling alliance.
