Two police officers have died following a fatal road accident involving a police vehicle and a trailer along the busy Webuye–Malaba highway in the Matulo area.
According to eyewitnesses and local authorities, the officers' vehicle was traveling at high speed when it collided head-on with an oncoming truck, leaving the front sections of both vehicles completely mangled.
The crash occurred on Sunday evening, and Bungoma South Sub-County Police Commander Rodgers Bosire has since confirmed the tragic loss of the two officers, who were attached to the Bungoma Railways Police Station.
“It’s a great loss to the service,” Bosire said. “We have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident. For now, we urge road users to exercise caution and observe traffic regulations.”
The bodies of the deceased officers were moved to Webuye County Hospital mortuary as their families and colleagues come to terms with the shocking loss.
Truck Driver: "It's a Miracle I Survived"
Speaking from the scene, the truck driver, who survived the crash with minor injuries, described the incident as a miraculous escape. Visibly shaken, the father of seven recounted the terrifying moment the police vehicle veered into his path.
“I don’t know where those officers were rushing to,” he said. “I just saw headlights coming fast and then a loud bang. I thank God for sparing my life. It was like something out of a nightmare.”
He added that he deeply regrets the loss of life and expressed his condolences to the families of the officers.
Ongoing Investigations
Authorities are now working to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal collision. Initial reports suggest speeding may have been a contributing factor, but investigators will also examine other possibilities, including visibility and mechanical failure.
The incident has reignited concerns about road safety, especially along the Webuye–Malaba route, which is known for heavy traffic involving both commercial and government vehicles.
As the police service mourns the fallen officers, many are calling for better enforcement of traffic laws and improved driver training to prevent further tragedies on Kenya's roads.
