Tawe Nation Demands Justice After Death of Albert Ojwang in Police Custody

The Tawe Nation has issued a powerful statement mourning the tragic and suspicious death of Albert Ojwang, a well-known educator and social media activist, who died while in police custody under circumstances that continue to shock the country.

In a heartfelt message released Monday afternoon, the Tawe Nation expressed profound sorrow over the loss of Ojwang, describing him as “a beloved educator, a passionate social influencer, and a courageous voice whose impact resonated across our country.”

His untimely death, they said, was “a heavy blow to all who knew him and to the many more who were inspired by his work and words.”

Ojwang was reportedly arrested on Sunday at his family home in Homa Bay by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in full view of his parents. He was transported to Nairobi and held at the Central Police Station, where family members allege he was denied visitation and never formally booked.

By Monday morning, his father was told his son had died—allegedly after "injuring himself" in a police cell and succumbing to the wounds en route to Mbagathi Hospital. No independent verification of this account has been provided by the police.

In response to growing public outrage and calls for accountability, the Tawe Nation urged swift and transparent action from oversight bodies.

“We urgently call upon the relevant authorities, including the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the National Police Service, to launch a prompt, transparent, and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death,” the statement read.

"Justice must be pursued with integrity and urgency. Every Kenyan, regardless of status or profession, deserves dignity, truth, and accountability."

The Tawe Nation’s call for justice echoes the sentiment of thousands across social media, where the hashtag #JusticeForAlbert continues to trend. Civil rights organizations, educators, and political leaders have joined in demanding an immediate inquiry and public release of all records related to Ojwang’s detention and death.

The IPOA has not yet responded publicly to the calls, and the National Police Service has yet to issue an official statement.

As public pressure mounts, the legacy of Albert Ojwang—as a fearless advocate, teacher, and citizen—continues to rally voices demanding not just answers, but accountability.

“Not only must justice be done,” the Tawe Nation concluded, “it must also be seen to be done.”

Albert Ojwang is remembered not only for what he said—but for what he stood for. His death has left a void, but also ignited a nationwide demand for truth.
