Tensions are rising at Kapsaos Secondary School following serious allegations against the school's principal, Mrs. Benina Soi, who is accused of installing covert audio surveillance equipment in the school staffroom without the consent of teachers or stakeholders.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Uasin Gishu County branch, has demanded the immediate removal of the surveillance system, citing a breach of teachers’ constitutional rights to privacy under Article 31 of the Kenyan Constitution.
In a formal letter dated June 3, 2025, KUPPET County Secretary Mr. Elijah Maiyo accused Mrs. Soi of using the surveillance system to monitor private conversations among staff and stakeholders, particularly during meetings she does not attend in person. “This is a gross infringement on privacy and professional integrity,” said Mr. Maiyo.
The letter also raises concerns about possible conflict of interest in the procurement of the surveillance equipment, alleging that the installation was carried out by the principal’s son, Mr. Albert Soin, who was "paid handsomely" for the contract. KUPPET has demanded a full investigation into the tendering process and a refund of any funds misused, to be redirected toward academic improvement programs.
Of equal concern, according to the union, is the apparent decline in the school’s academic and enrollment performance, with student numbers reportedly dropping from 700 to just 150 over the past two years. Mr. Maiyo questions the principal’s priorities, suggesting that more effort should be placed on academic recovery rather than surveillance.
“If the surveillance system is not removed by Monday, June 9, unspecified action will be taken to ensure it is dismantled,” the letter warns.
Efforts to reach Mrs. Soi for comment were unsuccessful at the time of publishing. The Ministry of Education and Teachers Service Commission have not yet issued an official response.
