MTRH Enhances Renal Replacement Therapy with Increased Hemodiafiltration

‎Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital’s Nephrology Department has increased the number of Hemodiafiltration (HDF) machines for better purification of kidneys during dialysis.
‎The unit, through the equipment placement program with Fresenius Medical Care, is able to provide the only such therapy for managing of Kidney related conditions in a public hospital in East & Central Africa.
‎HDF is currently the latest technology used for dialysis, in which blood purification is many times better compared to the traditional hemodialysis.
‎MTRH has the capacity to conduct 20 HDF procedures at a go via its 5008s Cordiax & the 6008 CARE system machines to both pediatric and adult patients.
‎HDF is a form of renal replacement therapy that utilizes hemodialysis and hemofiltration, using both diffusion and convection to remove waste and excess fluid from the blood. It's particularly effective at removing larger, middle-molecular-weight solutes, making it a very beneficial option for individuals with end-stage renal disease.
‎“The quality of life of a patient also improves due to better outcomes, with the patients ordinarily taking longer periods of time before the next session as compared to normal hemodialysis,” said the Head of Nephrology Unit, Dr. Philip Cheptinga.
‎MTRH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Philip Kirwa thanked the Government, through the Ministry of Health in supporting the placement contracts that has enabled the Hospital provide the best available quality care and management to the renal patients.
‎“This level of care is very affordable as the procedures are reimbursed through SHA and the patients do not have to bear high cost(s) associated with accessing such a procedure.” he added.
