A police officer was killed and two others injured after an armed gang ambushed officers on patrol in Nakuru County on Sunday night. The attack occurred in the Free Area Estate neighborhood, sparking a manhunt as security forces intensify efforts to apprehend the suspects.
Nakuru East Sub County Police Commander Samson Adanje reported that the gang launched a surprise assault on the officers, who tried to subdue the attackers but sustained injuries in the process. The wounded officers were rushed to a nearby hospital and are currently receiving treatment.
In response to the incident and ongoing insecurity, Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika convened an urgent security meeting with county officials and law enforcement agencies. She urged residents to remain vigilant and work closely with authorities to restore peace in the city.
“Following the recent wave of armed robberies and tragic loss of lives in Nakuru, I have met with security teams to review the incidents. We are committed to working closely with security agencies to ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” Governor Kihika said. “I call on all Nakuru residents to report any suspicious activities as we stand united to protect our communities.”
Nakuru has been grappling with persistent gang-related crime, with some groups brazenly operating in broad daylight. Earlier this year, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) deployed a special investigative team to dismantle criminal networks terrorizing residents.
In October 2023, police arrested a 10-member gang suspected of multiple thefts and violent crimes following a public tip-off. Confiscated items included toy guns, knives, mobile phones, and rolls of bhang, believed to have been used in the gang’s illicit activities.
As security agencies continue their crackdown, residents remain anxious but hopeful that increased patrols and investigations will bring lasting peace to Nakuru.
