Police Intercept Vehicle Ferrying Illicit Alcohol After Hit-and-Run on Migori-Kisii Highway

Police in Kisii County have intensified their crackdown on second-generation alcohol following the interception of a vehicle loaded with illicit brews after a hit-and-run incident along the Migori-Kisii Highway near Suneka Town.

According to a statement released by the National Police Service, the incident occurred on Saturday, May 31, when a speeding white Toyota Probox (registration number KDH 998F) reportedly hit several motorists before fleeing the scene. Officers from Gesonso Police Station swiftly responded to the alert and successfully intercepted the vehicle along the highway.

Upon inspection, the vehicle was found to be transporting a substantial consignment of suspected illicit alcohol—58 cartons of "Best" and 40 cartons of "Smart" brand alcoholic drinks. Each carton contained 20 bottles of 250 ml, totaling nearly 2,000 bottles of products classified as second-generation alcohol by health and safety authorities.

The vehicle’s driver was immediately arrested and taken into custody. He is expected to be arraigned in court as police continue their investigations. The seized products have been secured as evidence.

Second-generation alcohol refers to cheap, often unregulated spirits that pose significant health risks due to poor manufacturing standards and harmful additives. The sale and distribution of such products have been linked to numerous health emergencies and fatalities across the country.

In a statement, the National Police Service reiterated its commitment to curbing the proliferation of dangerous alcoholic substances and warned of intensified enforcement operations in hotspot areas.

“We urge members of the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and cooperate with law enforcement in the ongoing fight against the sale and consumption of harmful alcohol,” the statement read.

This latest seizure underscores the challenges authorities face in combating illegal alcohol networks that continue to endanger public health despite government bans and ongoing crackdowns.

Efforts to trace the source and intended destination of the intercepted alcohol are underway as the police pursue other suspects who may be linked to the distribution network.
