Nyakera Hints at Nairobi Political Ambitions, Joins Gachagua-Linked Party Ahead of 2027

Former Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) Board Chair and ex-Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera has set the political stage abuzz after signaling his interest in Nairobi politics ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during an interview on NTV Monday morning, Nyakera confirmed that he had officially left the Farmers Party and joined the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), a party widely associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. He described the move as strategic, positioning himself for a deeper engagement in Nairobi County’s political landscape.

“In Nairobi, I believe that the party I can work with is the DCP. This is because it is a truthful party,” Nyakera said. “Right now, we want the truth in Kenya—and for Nairobi. We also want development for Nairobians.”

Although he stopped short of formally declaring his candidacy for the Nairobi governorship, Nyakera’s remarks and recent actions have only intensified speculation about his political intentions.

Fueling the speculation was a high-profile meeting with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka at the SKM Command Centre in Nairobi. Following their discussion, Kalonzo referred to Nyakera as a 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial candidate in a statement shared online.

“Today, I met with Irungu Nyakera, former PS and Nairobi 2027 gubernatorial candidate, at the SKM Command Centre, Nairobi,” Kalonzo posted. “We discussed a number of pertinent issues concerning the County of Nairobi and the way forward in our dream to realise its full potential.”

Nyakera used the interview platform to deliver sharp criticism of the current county and national leadership, accusing them of being detached from the pressing needs of ordinary citizens. He identified the high cost of living, rampant unemployment, and lack of meaningful development as Nairobi’s most urgent challenges.

“The current leadership seems disconnected from the people. Nairobians need someone who understands their daily struggles,” he said.

On the issue of entrenched corruption and cartels in Nairobi, Nyakera refrained from directly linking the issue to a future political role but cited his past success in confronting powerful networks during his tenures in the transport sector and at the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA).

“If given the opportunity, I would bring the same no-nonsense approach to Nairobi,” he asserted.

Nyakera also made headlines for suggesting a constitutional amendment to raise the minimum age requirement for presidential candidates to 65 years, arguing that leadership at the highest level should demand greater experience and maturity.

“The presidency is not a trial-and-error job. It requires someone who has lived, learned, and led with wisdom,” he said.

Despite his departure from the Farmers Party, Nyakera reassured supporters that the party’s founding mission—to champion the rights and welfare of farmers—would continue under new leadership.

While Nyakera has yet to officially announce his gubernatorial bid, his political realignment, growing alliances, and public engagements indicate that he is preparing for a major role in Nairobi’s 2027 race.
