Two suspects involved in a robbery with violence incident in Meru County were arrested on Tuesday night following a swift police response, with officers also recovering an AK-47 rifle believed to have been used in the attack.
The incident occurred on the evening of June 4, 2025, at around 8:30 p.m., when a National Police Reservist (NPR) stationed near Mungania Shopping Centre reported hearing gunshots. According to the NPR, one of the suspects was spotted brandishing an AK-47 rifle. However, upon being challenged, the armed individual dropped the weapon and fled the scene on foot.
Officers from Kathare, Subuiga, and Buuri East Police Stations quickly mobilized and launched a coordinated operation. At the scene, they discovered an abandoned motor vehicle believed to have been used as a getaway car by the suspects. Inside the vehicle, police recovered two mobile phones, various personal effects, and a female suspect, who was promptly taken into custody.
Moments later, a second suspect was found hiding inside a nearby residence and was also arrested. Preliminary investigations indicate that the duo had just robbed a local shop attendant, who sustained minor injuries during the ordeal.
The recovered AK-47 rifle and the motor vehicle have since been secured and handed over to forensic experts for further analysis as investigations continue.
The suspects remain in custody and are expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days to face charges of robbery with violence and illegal possession of a firearm.
Meru County police have lauded the NPR and local officers for their swift response, which they say helped prevent further harm and led to the successful arrest of the suspects.
Authorities have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies as efforts to curb armed crime in the region intensify.
