Kenya has moved a step closer to becoming a full member of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), following a high-level meeting between senior government officials and an EBRD delegation led by Dr. Heike Harmgart, the Bank’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa.
The delegation was hosted at the National Treasury as part of a country assessment mission that will inform EBRD’s expansion into Kenya. The visit marks a key milestone in efforts to deepen development partnerships and attract greater international support for Kenya’s economic transformation agenda.
Speaking after the meeting, Principal Secretary for Interior Dr. Chris Kiptoo emphasized the strategic importance of the visit.
“This engagement reflects our strong commitment to building global partnerships that drive inclusive and sustainable growth,” Dr. Kiptoo said. “We explored potential areas of collaboration including infrastructure development, climate resilience, SME support, and digital transformation—critical sectors under our Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.”
Kenya's BETA plan focuses on empowering grassroots economic actors, improving public service delivery, and fostering innovation. Government officials noted that EBRD’s financial tools, technical expertise, and track record in fostering private-sector-led growth would significantly boost the country’s development priorities.
Dr. Harmgart praised Kenya's progress and reaffirmed EBRD’s commitment to supporting emerging economies across Africa. “We are excited about the potential for a strong and long-term partnership with Kenya,” she said. “Our goal is to support inclusive, green, and digital development that creates real impact.”
The ongoing assessment mission will inform the final steps toward Kenya’s full accession to EBRD membership. Once formalized, Kenya will join a growing list of African countries engaging with the institution to unlock investment and technical support.
The meeting concluded with optimism on both sides, setting the stage for a new era of cooperation aimed at delivering tangible benefits for Kenyan citizens.
