For Joseph Kariuki Mbuthia, a resident of Kangema Sub-County in Murang’a County, life had been a constant struggle with pain and uncertainty. For 35 years, he battled an undiagnosed cervical spine degenerative disorder that progressively worsened, robbing him of his mobility and independence. But today, he speaks of hope, healing, and a second chance at life — all thanks to a highly experienced team of neurosurgeons at Tophill Hospital in Eldoret.
Mr. Mbuthia’s ordeal began in 1989 with mild neck discomfort. Over time, the pain intensified and spread to his arms, severely limiting his ability to perform basic daily tasks. Despite seeking help from multiple hospitals in Nairobi and undergoing numerous tests, a definitive diagnosis remained elusive.
"I've been to so many hospitals over the years. Every time I thought I'd finally get the help I needed, I'd leave with more medication and no real answers," Mr. Mbuthia recounted. "The pain became my normal. I couldn’t carry anything, and even simple movements were difficult."
His turning point came in an unexpected encounter with a woman named Wanjiru, a former spine patient who had undergone successful treatment at Tophill Hospital. Moved by her own recovery, she urged Mr. Mbuthia to travel to Eldoret and seek the expertise of the hospital’s neurosurgical team.
Encouraged and desperate for relief, he made the journey the very next day. After stopping in Nairobi to collect his medical records, he arrived at Tophill Hospital early the following morning.
The neurosurgical team at Tophill conducted a comprehensive evaluation, including a CT scan that confirmed a long-standing and advanced cervical spine degeneration. His spinal discs were severely worn out, and nerves in his neck were compressed — a situation that required immediate surgical intervention.
“We found extensive disc degeneration and nerve impingement,” said one of the lead surgeons. “It was clear that Mr. Mbuthia’s quality of life had been deeply impacted for years. Surgery to replace the damaged cervical discs was necessary to restore function and eliminate the chronic pain.”
On Saturday, the team performed a delicate spinal procedure to replace the degenerated discs. The surgery was successful, and Mr. Mbuthia’s recovery was swift.
“After the surgery, I felt like a new person,” he said. “The pain I had lived with for more than three decades was suddenly gone. I could move, carry things, and live again. It feels like a miracle.”
The neurosurgical team expressed their joy at the outcome, praising Mr. Mbuthia’s resilience and the hospital’s ability to deliver transformative care.
“His story is a testament to hope, persistence, and the impact that proper diagnosis and treatment can have,” one of the surgeons noted. “At Tophill, we are committed to providing advanced care and restoring lives.”
Tophill Hospital has emerged as a leading center for neurosurgical excellence in Kenya, renowned for its cutting-edge spine procedures and patient-centered approach. Patients from across the country and the region seek its specialized services, particularly for complex spine and neurological conditions.
“I thank the entire team at Tophill — from the surgeons to the nurses and support staff. They treated me with dignity and gave me my life back,” said a grateful Mr. Mbuthia. “May God bless them for their work. I hope my story encourages others living with chronic conditions not to give up.”
Now recuperating at home, Mr. Mbuthia plans to use his experience to advocate for awareness around spine health and the importance of seeking specialized care. His message is simple: “Never stop searching for answers. Healing is possible.”
