Diaspora engagement in national development has received a major boost following a high-level consultative meeting between Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, Ms Roseline Njogu, and Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development, Mr Charles Hinga. The two leaders met to chart the way forward on extending the Affordable Housing Program to Kenyans living abroad.
The discussions focused on integrating the diaspora community into the Boma Yangu initiative, a government-led effort aimed at delivering safe, decent, and affordable housing to Kenyan citizens. Recognizing the diaspora’s significant contribution through remittances and investments, the government seeks to provide them with a structured and reliable avenue to invest in real estate back home.
To support this objective, a dedicated information portal has been launched, offering diaspora participants a seamless way to register, view housing opportunities, and track application progress. This platform ensures transparency and builds trust, allowing Kenyans abroad to engage with the housing program from anywhere in the world.
Present at the meeting were Mr Jeremiah Simu, Chair of the Affordable Housing Program Board, and Mr Glenns Etyang, Deputy Director of Operations at the State Department for Diaspora Affairs. Their participation reflects the collaborative approach being adopted to ensure the program's success.
The Affordable Housing Program is a key pillar of Kenya’s broader development agenda. By opening doors for diaspora involvement, the government is reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity and economic empowerment for all Kenyans, regardless of location. The initiative not only addresses the housing deficit but also strengthens the bond between the diaspora and their country of origin through tangible investment opportunities.
This expanded outreach marks a new chapter in diaspora affairs and housing development, signaling a future where all Kenyans can find a place to call home.
