Evaleen Mitei Appointed Acting TSC CEO as Search for Macharia’s Successor Intensifies

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has appointed Evaleen Mitei as the Acting Chief Executive Officer, following the exit of long-serving CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia, whose tenure officially concluded this week.

Mitei, who currently serves as the TSC Director of Discipline, brings a wealth of experience spanning over two decades in Kenya’s education sector. Her appointment comes at a critical time as the Commission undergoes a transition in leadership and seeks to maintain continuity in managing the country’s vast teaching workforce.

A seasoned education administrator, Mitei began her career as a classroom teacher at Somoei Boys High School, where she taught English and Literature for four years before joining the TSC secretariat in 1999. Over the years, she has held several senior roles, earning a reputation for her firm yet fair leadership in handling teacher discipline and professional standards.

She holds a Master’s degree in Human Resource Management from Manchester University (UK) and a Bachelor of Education (English and Literature) from Moi University.

Her appointment positions her among the top five contenders to permanently succeed Dr. Macharia, whose legacy includes the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and major reforms in teacher management and training.

In a brief statement, the Commission said Mitei's appointment is intended to ensure operational continuity while the process to select a substantive CEO is underway.

“Ms. Mitei’s extensive institutional knowledge and leadership experience make her well-suited to steer the Commission in this transitional period,” the statement read.

Stakeholders in the education sector have welcomed the appointment, expressing confidence in her ability to uphold professional standards and address ongoing challenges such as teacher shortages, deployment inefficiencies, and implementation of the CBC.

The Teachers Service Commission is expected to announce the final selection for the CEO position in the coming months after a competitive recruitment process.

Mitei’s elevation to the helm—albeit in an acting capacity—marks a significant moment for a career public servant who has spent over 25 years advancing the goals of Kenya’s education system from within the Commission’s ranks.
