DIG Eliud Kipkoech Lagat Steps Aside Amid Probe into Blogger Albert Ojwang’s Death

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Kenya Police Service, Eliud Kipkoech Lagat, has stepped aside from his position as public outrage mounts over the controversial death of blogger Albert Ojwang’. The move comes amid ongoing investigations into allegations that link Lagat to the arrest and subsequent death of the outspoken digital activist.

Ojwang’, known for his bold exposĂ©s on corruption within the security sector, was arrested last week following a defamation complaint allegedly lodged by DIG Lagat. His lifeless body was discovered in police custody under unclear circumstances, sparking widespread condemnation and renewed calls for police accountability.

In a statement issued Monday, Lagat announced his temporary departure from office, saying his decision was made "in good and conscious thought" given the public interest in the case.

“I have today opted to step aside from the office of the Deputy Inspector General – Kenya Police Service pending completion of investigations,” said Lagat. “The functions of the office will henceforth be performed by my deputy until the investigations are concluded.”

Lagat expressed willingness to cooperate with the probe and extended his condolences to Ojwang’s family.

“I undertake to provide any support that may be required of me during the investigations of the unfortunate incident,” he added.

Ojwang’, who had amassed a large following online, had recently published allegations implicating Lagat in a covert scheme involving the strategic placement of police officers within key units of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and traffic departments. These placements were allegedly designed to control revenue collection and intelligence flows within the force.

His sudden death while in custody has fueled suspicions of foul play, prompting swift reactions from civil society groups, opposition politicians, and human rights organizations. Many are demanding an independent investigation and systemic reforms within the police service.

Amnesty International Kenya and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) have both called for transparency and protection of whistleblowers and journalists working to expose corruption.

A government task force has been convened to oversee the investigations, while the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has pledged to conduct a parallel inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s arrest and death.
