Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, has publicly addressed the tragic death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody, extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and pledging the government’s commitment to justice.
Speaking during a special session in the Senate, CS Murkomen expressed deep sympathy to Albert Ojwang’s parents, wife, and child, saying,
“As a parent, a citizen of this country and a person charged with the responsibility of ensuring the safety and security of all Kenyans, I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Albert Ojwang. To his father and mother, his wife and child, I say pole sana.”
He assured the family and the public that the government will deploy all necessary resources to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death.
“We are committed to ensuring that everyone involved in this crime is brought to justice expeditiously and that no interference from any quarter will be tolerated during the investigation,” CS Murkomen affirmed.
The Cabinet Secretary clarified his role under the Constitution of Kenya 2010, particularly Article 245(4), noting that his responsibility is limited to providing policy guidance, while investigative powers rest with the office of the Inspector General of Police.
“I expect, on behalf of the people of Kenya and my Ministry, full accountability from the Inspector General of Police on this matter,” he said.
CS Murkomen also expressed confidence in the constitutional institutions tasked with oversight of the police service, namely the National Police Service Commission and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), emphasizing their vital role in resolving the case.
“Our constitution is very robust, and I have full confidence that these bodies, working in close collaboration, will bring clarity and justice in this matter,” he added.
The death of Albert Ojwang, who died while in police custody, has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for accountability and reforms within the security agencies. CS Murkomen’s statement aims to reassure Kenyans of the government’s commitment to uphold the rule of law and human rights in law enforcement.
The government has promised to keep the public informed as investigations progress.
