At least six journalists from major media houses were injured and had their equipment stolen during chaotic scenes at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County on Saturday night, as they covered Kenya’s 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations.

The journalists, representing Standard Media Group, Nation Media Group, and Royal Media Services, were reportedly attacked by a group of goons, with some witnesses alleging the involvement of police officers targeting media personnel. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and raised serious concerns about press freedom and safety during national events.

Among those injured were TV producers Steve Okedi (KTN) and Marble Achieng (NTV), as well as journalists Ephantus Maina (Royal Media Services) and George Odiwuor (NTV). Odiwuor’s work laptop was stolen during the assault.

“We had our media accreditation, but they still targeted us. They pushed us and started hitting us with batons, and that is how I got injured,” said Marble Achieng, describing the violence that unfolded despite official credentials.

The Kisumu Journalists Network Interim Chairman, Rushdie Oudia, strongly condemned the attack, calling it a blatant assault on press freedom. “As journalists, we take this incident with great concern and shock, especially given the involvement of police officers who are supposed to protect lives and property,” he said.

Multiple attendees at the event, which drew thousands, reported thefts of mobile phones and other valuables. Some had arrived as early as 9:30 PM on Saturday but were not spared from the violence and robberies.

In response, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that several suspects linked to phone thefts at the stadium were arrested, with 20 stolen phones recovered so far.

Despite the disruptions, the Madaraka Day celebrations proceeded, highlighting Homa Bay’s potential as a national event host and maritime economic hub. However, the attacks have exposed critical gaps in security arrangements and cast a shadow over the commemorations.

The incident has renewed calls from media rights groups for stronger protection of journalists and transparent investigations to ensure accountability. As Kenya celebrates 62 years of self-governance, safeguarding press freedom remains a vital challenge.
