Uasin Gishu Champions Healthcare Workforce with Landmark Union Deals

The County Government of Uasin Gishu has taken a bold step towards transforming its healthcare sector by signing historic recognition agreements with two major health unions. The move, which marks a significant milestone under Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim’s leadership, affirms the county’s commitment to empowering health professionals and strengthening service delivery in line with the second pillar of the Nguzo Kumi development blueprint.

In a high-profile event held at the Uasin Gishu County Headquarters on Wednesday, the Kenya National Union of Pharmaceutical Technologists (K.N.U.P.T) and the Kenya Environmental Health and Public Health Practitioners Union (KEHPHPU) officially signed recognition agreements with the county government.

The agreements grant the unions formal recognition as representatives of their members, laying the foundation for structured engagement and dialogue on issues affecting the healthcare workforce.

“This is more than a signature; it’s a statement, a commitment to dignified, quality, and affordable healthcare powered by a motivated and recognized health workforce,” said Dr. Paul Wangwe, Chief Officer for Preventive and Promotive Health.

Pharmaceutical technologists, described as the backbone of medication safety and health logistics, were among the first to be recognized through the K.N.U.P.T agreement. Their critical roles include medication dispensing, patient counseling, inventory management, and health data reporting—functions vital to efficient and safe healthcare delivery.

Simultaneously, the recognition of KEHPHPU marked a milestone for public health professionals, who play a crucial role in preventing disease and promoting community wellness across Uasin Gishu.

“These recognition agreements affirm the rightful place of our healthcare professionals in the decision-making spaces,” added Dr. Wangwe. “Their voices and contributions can no longer be sidelined—they are shaping the future of healthcare in Uasin Gishu.”

Governor Bii’s administration has prioritized human resource development as a cornerstone of its healthcare reforms. By recognizing and empowering frontline health workers, the county aims to build a more motivated, professional, and responsive health system.

“With these agreements, Uasin Gishu becomes a model for progressive healthcare governance,” said Governor Bii in a statement. “This is where partnerships, recognition, and professionalism converge to ensure no resident is left behind in accessing dignified healthcare.”

The recognition deals are expected to usher in improved working conditions, better communication between workers and management, and enhanced delivery of healthcare services to the people of Uasin Gishu.
