Tragedy in Bungoma: Brother Killed Over Memory Card Dispute

By Ruth Sang

Cheptais, Bungoma County  A domestic quarrel between two brothers over a memory card ended in tragedy on Thursday evening when one of them fatally attacked the other with a panga.

The incident occurred in Kimasielo village, Cheptais Sub-County, where the siblings, aged 24 and 21, reportedly got into a heated argument after one accused the other of misplacing a memory card. The confrontation escalated, and in a fit of rage, the older brother allegedly grabbed a panga and struck his sibling multiple times, killing him on the spot.

Shocked villagers rushed to the scene after hearing screams, only to find the younger brother lying in a pool of blood. The suspect attempted to flee but was apprehended shortly after by police with the help of locals.

Confirming the incident, Bungoma County Police Commander Francis Kooli said the suspect is in custody and will face murder charges.

“It is unfortunate that such a minor disagreement could lead to the loss of life,” said Kooli. “We urge families to embrace peaceful conflict resolution and avoid turning to violence.”

The body of the deceased was moved to Bungoma County Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination, while investigations continue.

Local residents have been left in shock and are calling on leaders and counselors to intervene and help address growing cases of family-related violence in the region.

“We never thought something like this could happen here,” said Mary Nasimiyu, a neighbor. “These boys grew up together. It's heartbreaking.”
