Tophill Hospital CEO Donates Jerseys, Trophies and Health Support for Rift Valley Commanders Football Tournament

Tophill Hospital has pledged its full support for the upcoming Commanders Football Tournament in the Rift Valley region, scheduled to take place at the GK Prison grounds in Eldoret. The hospital’s CEO and lead surgeon, Dr. Florentius Koech, announced the donation of trophies, sports jerseys, and essential health services for the event.

Dr. Koech revealed that the hospital will sponsor prizes for the tournament’s top three teams — including winners, first and second runners-up — as a gesture to promote wellness, unity, and mental health awareness within the Kenya Prisons Service.

“Sports offer a natural and effective way of preventing health hazards and strengthening mental wellness, especially in demanding institutions like correctional facilities,” Dr. Koech said.

In addition to the sports equipment, Tophill Hospital will deploy an ambulance, emergency response team, and first-aid personnel throughout the tournament. Medical experts from the hospital will also conduct sessions on mental health awareness, which Dr. Koech described as a growing concern across many institutions, including the prison service.

“We are seeing a sharp rise in mental health challenges. Creating safe spaces like sports tournaments is one way to address this while encouraging physical activity, camaraderie, and resilience,” he added.

Tophill Hospital, which offers medical services to Kenya Prisons staff across the country, has positioned itself as a key partner in supporting the well-being of uniformed officers.

The tournament is expected to attract teams from various prison facilities across the Rift Valley, with the goal of fostering discipline, unity, and morale among officers. The involvement of healthcare professionals is expected to add a holistic touch to the competition, blending physical activity with mental and emotional well-being.

Organizers have praised the hospital’s gesture, noting that it reflects a growing recognition of the intersection between sport and healthcare.

The tournament is set to kick off this weekend, with high expectations for both competitive play and positive conversations around mental health.
